Soka Gakkai

Incredible. Just a few days ago I searched the Web for a Buddhist sect called "Soka Gakkai" and now Joi Ito, weblog star from Japan, blogged about a personal meeting with one of the sect's officials. A close friend of ours got married in a nearby Soka Gakkai centre (beautifully located in Bingen, on the banks of the Rhine) last week, both bride and groom being followers of that sect. I still have mixed feelings, very much the same feelings Ito describes. Of course I found all kind of material about the sect. Some pages, like "The Victims of Soka Gakkai" were indeed very disturbing and full of hatred, making SG look like a Japanese version of the Illuminati and not like a harmless Nichiren Buddhist sect they claim to be. However, I find it hard to come to a definite conclusion. I respect our newlywed friends very much and I feel that they are good people. I am slightly reminded of Steiner's Anthroposophy here in Germany. They also do strange things, look like a cult and might have an ideology you can't completely agree with, but they seem to attract many good people and you can't argue some of their positive commitments in social and educational matters away. Anyway, I recommend Ito's weblog entry again. Great food for thought. Posted by jens at August 20, 2003 05:07 PM | TrackBack

I find the members I know of SGI to be nice people too. I think many of their problems come directly from the leadership, especially the president Daisaku Ikeda. I found this website on him and the SGI. Any comments?

ABOUT TUE PACIFIST SOKA GAKKAI

Time magazine (Time Asia) - December 1,2003 / Vol. 162 No. 21

Little known outside Japan, the New Komeito is an offshoot of the
country's
largest lay Buddhist organization, Soka Gakkai. In the elections, the
New
Komeito was the only party other than the DPJ to pick up more seats,
increasing its bloc from 31 to 34. But the New Komeito's influence
radiates
far wider than those numbers indicate. As most smaller parties drift
into
irrelevance or disband completely, the New Komeito, as a member of the
LDP's
ruling coalition, is cementing its role as kingmaker.

Offshoot = germoglio , ramo , o rampollo
quindi il Komeito e' un "offshoot" della Soka Gakkai

LDP, Komei, DPJ lawmakers call for a militarist Japan

A group of Dietmembers from the Liberal Democratic Party, the
Democratic Party of Japan, and the Komei Party proposed that Japan exercise
the right of collective self-defense, introduce the cruise missile system,
and reconsider the Three Non-nuclear Principles.

These proposals were specified in a document titled, "For concrete
plans for proactive defense strategy"written by the Parliamentarian Council
for National Security on the occasion of the Japan-U.S. Defense Strategy
Council meeting held from November 20 to 22 in Tokyo.

The "proactive defense strategy" denies the present national policy of
exclusively defensive defense or the minimum use of force on the grounds of
growing threats from terrorists or "rogue nations"

Komei secretary general says opposing war 'benefits enemy'

A leader of the Komei Party, one of the ruling parties, says that
international opposition to a U.S. attack on Iraq is an act "advantageous to
the enemy and will delay a solution to the Iraq problem."

Fuyushiba Tetsuzo, secretary general of the Komei Party, made this
remark on NHK's "Sunday Discussion" broadcast on February 16.

He said that U.S. Ambassador to Japan Howard Baker correctly said that
U.S. threats make weapons inspections successful.

Criticizing Fuyushiba on the same debate program, JCP Secretariat Head
Ichida Tadayoshi said that Fuyushiba should withdraw that remark. He said,
"What Mr. Fuyushiba is saying is that war is necessary to avoid giving the
enemy an advantage. For Mr. Fuyushiba, calling for a peaceful resolution
through further weapons inspections also amounts to an act advantageous to
the enemy."

Fuyushiba not only refused to retract his remarks, but made further
similar remarks on TV Asahi's "Sunday Project" program later in the day.
"Continued inspections will only please Iraq's president," he said.

Asked by the TV Asahi program's moderator, if France, Germany, Russia,
and China are wrong in calling for U.N. inspections to be continued,
Fuyushiba answered, "Yes, they are."

When the moderator asked him if Japan should support the United
States' plan to remove the Hussein government, Fuyushiba said, "I bet that
the world will be in favor of it." (end)
